I have a lot of hope at the moment. Not because things are generally going well; they’re not, really (some things are going badly, others may or may not work out in a way I’d currently deem satisfactory). Not because things that I care about and am investing in look like they’re going to go well; there’s not much sign of that. I have hope fundamentally because God is good, and things will work out well according to His good timing. Because God is transcendent, there is hope even in ‘hopeless’ situations.

“Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good.”
